Anyalisis of Past Students Work.

Presented here are two previous students media pieces; a film opening and a title sequence.

The first piece presented here is the thriller/action film opening. Though the plot, to me at least, is unclear, overall the opening title is excellent, showing many key aspects of a thriller film as well as high quality production levels and well edited material. This film opening sequence relies heavily on the speed and length of shots to show action,as well as camera work and angles to present different shot types.
The beginning shots, just when you are being introduced to the main character and the location, are slow and long, such as the shot of the protagonist waiting for the elevator. This creates a build up to the following events. What I think is really cleaver is how this group has used the long shots to edit in the titles, such as the director and starring actors. The incorporation of titles within the action of the shot makes it seem more high quality and something that looking back on I wish our group had at least considered. The titles fit in well yet stand out enough to be noticeable, not taking away enough attention away from the action of the film as some titles do. As the film begins to develop momentum and we begin to understand more of what is going on, the shots speed up, cutting off quicker, presenting us with fast paced action showing two men chasing the main protagonist. It is at this point that different filming styles have been used such as the point of view angles, which had obviously required the actor to strap or hold the camera to himself. I really liked this effect as I though it made the whole thing seem more personal and realistic.
The sound used for this film opening is especially good. At the beginning we only hear pulsing and an increasing pitch, when all of a sudden as soon as the action begins, fast paced pounding music crates tension and the 'chasing sequence' effect. The soundtrack/ music used helps in telling the audience the genre and what the film is about, with this one suggesting action.

The clip shown here is a film title sequence. The whole thing has been filmed and edited in such a way that it looks as if it was shot all in one take, with constant pans and closeups and tracking shots. Instead of editing in the titles like the previously written about group or my own group, this group decided to make their titles real/realistic which I find really clever. It ties in completely with the whole concept of the girl getting ready and looks real enough to fit in with the surrounding and look like it's meant to be there. This group have presented each title in a different way, one in a picture format whilst another written in eyeliner. This gives the whole clip more of a personal feel. Though not as high quality as the previous clip, this title sequence is excellent is the idea itself and the excision.
