7 Deadly Sins/Virtues

7 Deadly Sins/Virtues initial ideas:

Another one of our ideas was to base the film on the 7 deadly sins and the 7 heavenly virtues. Because our other ideas are mainly supernatural, we though this idea, incorporated with religion would fit in well. The idea came to us by looking into the concept of religion and discovering the 7 sins and virtues. Having come across Dante’s The Divine Comedy many times in the past, I thought that this could provide us with a link to the sins and virtues and help in basing our story upon.

Dante’s The Divine Comedy is a poem written in the 14th century about the afterlife. Within its three parts; Inferno (hell), Purgatorio (purgatory) and Paradiso (paradise or heaven), Dante suggests that sins and virtues have respective greatness, listing them as follows;

SIN
VIRTUE
·         lust- excessive sexual appetite
·         chastity- purity
·         gluttony- over indulgence
·         temperance- self restraint
·         greed-  materialism
·         charity- giving
·         sloth- laziness
·         diligence- integrity/ labourer
·         wrath- anger
·         forgiveness- composure
·         envy- jealousy
·         kindness- admiration
·         pride- vanity

·         humility- humbleness
With Dante’s poem and religion in mind, we arrived at the idea of angels, especially fallen angels. Angels are seen as God’s workers that mainly bring good however the concept of corrupt angels also exists, with the most famous example being Satan, once God’s right hand man. Fallen angels are ‘wicked’ or ‘rebellious’ angels that have been cast out of Heaven down to Earth.

With this in mind, we constructed the idea of joining the 7 sins and virtues with fallen angels.

The film would be based upon and around a group of ‘fallen’ angels who had recently been cast out of Heaven. Down on earth, Dante’s work is seen as great imaginative literature, however ‘imaginative’ is not the case, with all Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso existing. The book is rumoured to be the key to overthrowing the human race in Heaven though none of the angels still residing in heaven actually believe/ know of its true existence. The rejection of the 7 angels results in them discovering the poem, choosing to each become one of the 7 deadly sins, the fallen plan on destroying the human race.
Having researched and watched a number of films, thriller or not, we noticed the general trend being that the film is based more upon the ‘good guys’ or the ‘victims’. Therefore we decided to make this more about the 7 deadly sins, rather than the group of 7 heavenly virtues who must come together to beat the fallen. We thought this was a fun twist which enabled us to play around with whether the film would end in failure or victory for the fallen, avoiding the cliché of the ‘good’ side predictably winning.

The film would revolve around 7 lead characters, all representing a deadly sin, with less explored/minor characters being the 7 virtues, the opposing side. A decision to have a mixed gender group was made, due to the idea that not only men can be dangerous. Neither character personalities nor names have been discussed however we decided upon each character being what gender;
  • lust- FEMALE
  •  gluttony- MALE
  • greed- FEMALE
  • sloth-MALE
  •  wrath- MALE
  • envy- FEMALE
  •  pride- MALE

We thought that by making the film modern and based around this time we could make it current and in a way relatable due to the present time. The audience could put themselves in this situation and imagine what would be if something like this actually occurred, though completely unlikely.
The setting or location we thought would suit best to this concept and plot line is a town or village. Unlike the previous concept where we would need a much more busy environment, this time we wanted less people to ensure discretion and a safe house for the deadly sins. The action between the two opposing sides might not necessarily take place here yet as a group we liked the idea of the seclusion. Finding such a location to film at would be much easier for where we live in comparison to a busy city, which is another plus.
