title sequence research

Title sequence research- AMERICAN HORROR STORY

American horror story season 1-

Though this is not a film like the rest of those we have used as research, we thought that the title sequence in this TV show particularly showed the concept of thrillers really well.
The first noticeable thing about this title sequence is the sound/music used. The music is very dark, with a sound of a camera shatter continuously going on throughout the title. The music gets louder at some parts yet quieter at other. The music gives the title sequence an eerie quality, matching up well with the actual imagery.
All through the title sequence we as an audience are presented with miscunslous objects and strange locations, creating mystery as to how this links in with the actual series story. We are shown many objects, such as olden day photographs and clothes, representing childhood and children. It might not have been as creep if it wasn’t for the facts that for most of the shown photographs have cracked/damaged glass frames and the majority of the images, throughout the sequence are on fire. The photographs are burning, possibly representing the concept of a destructive childhood. None of the children in the photographs are happy looking, with expressionless faces and wearing olden day clothes. This season title sequence shows the idea of the past.

American horror story season 3-

This title sequence is, linking in with season 1, about the idea of the past. In this series, the show is about witches and witchcraft. This season uses the same or very similar music than to that of the previous two seasons, still with the suspenseful drum beat and almost screeching like noise in the distance. The visual aspects of this season are different however. The majority of the shots are black and white or very dark colours, implying that each shot was filmed during the night or evening. This gives the opening sequence fear. In comparison to season 1, this time there are many more shots of people/actors rather than ‘household objects’ and photographs. This title sequence shows more action. The characters shown however are barely ever shown face on or clearly enough to see the majority of their features. This creates suspense and mystery as you, the audience have no idea who or what these characters are.
This time the sequence is more glamorous than the other two seasons, with flowing dresses and high heels, as well as more glamorous characters and settings. The gruesome half animals and voodoo dolls are creepy and create discomfort , completely fitting in with the mood of the TV show.
