The image presented here is our final film title, the right font, size and colour.
If not already explained, the reason why we settled on calling our film KOMA was because first and foremost, Coma is already a film and TV series title. Other members of the group were not fazed by the idea of copyright or of naming our film after something that already existed, yet it was down to me to choose and I wanted something unique, more original that would still link in with the idea of the medical term; coma. Having come up with no other medical alternatives, I decided to look at the word itself. I learnt that the word coma comes from the Ancient Greek 'kōma' or 'deep sleep'. This jumped out at me immediately and I though it was a much more unique version of the title Coma which had been previously used more than once. This title gives variety as well as a bit of an edge I feel.
After having decided that our film wasn't going to be called Coma, the English version of the word, but the greek alternative Koma, I set to work thinking of how our title would look. Fine lines and smooth curves could not be used as this film is a thriller. Something jugged and rough needed to have been used. Finding a fonts website (HERE) I started browsing different fonts, looking for one that gave off the right mood and impression. I finally came across CASTOR, a font that I knew straight away fit the mood of the film perfectly. The holey lettering suggested something rough and the capitals outlined an importance. After selecting this font, it came down to the background and letter colouring. At this point I knew that throughout this film there would be white flashes, as well as black fading in and out. Our storyline was based upon someone ending up in a coma, a deep sleep and I linked this with the idea of darkness. When in a deep sleep, you are surrounded by darkness, until you awaken, a bright light shining through and breaking apart the darkness. I though that this could be shown by the title coming in from black, with the white lettering fading in from the darkness of the coma Drew is in.
