Title sequence- editing

Title sequence-

Making the title sequence for our film required us to collect a number of gruesome and scary like images, in order to fit in with the American Horror Story season 1 idea. This idea required images to flash onto the screen, appearing for a few seconds and then be replaced by another image and writing, showing the names of the director and starring cast, eventually fading into the title of the film; KOMA.

"As in the “American Horror Story” tradition, the title sequence packs in a boatload of imagery that offers little in the way of explanation but works overtime to creep out the viewer."- http://www.thewrap.com/american-horror-story-coven-title-sequence-is-all-sorts-of-random-creepiness-video/

I started the creating process by collecting the images we wanted from various members of our group who for other work pieces had such images which we though would be good to use. After I choose the right images, I manipulated each image on photoshop, changing the brightness and contrast of each image as well as occasionally making a photo black and white to give it more of a creepy  mood which was actually the atmosphere we were going for. After having manipulating these came the editing stage of the titles and the beginning credits.
I felt that the fond of the beginning titles used tells a lot about a film and that if the font doesn't match up with the rest of the film it'll ruin the rest of the feel of the film. Therefore I researched font types on various websites, finding the right CASTOR font which I felt was a good reflection of our film. The rugged and blurt edges of the font give an uncertainty and the 'holey' lettering makes the titles look worn and old. The mood of the lettering fits in with the mood of our film; nothing pretty and dainty about it like if for example I had used cursive writing.

The next step was creating the titles. I did this once again on photoshop. Opening up each saved image of the words needed in the castor font we wanted, I created an animation, each title lasting for 2 seconds, aside from the film title KOMA which lasts for 4 seconds, adding fading in effects at the beginning of the layer and at the end to create a white fade in and out. The film title was different as not only did it last longer than the other titles but the colours were also contrasting, the writing now white whist the lettering was white. That way the film title fit in with our dark opening sequence and gave it much more of an impact, varying from the other credits.

After having made the written titles, I set to making the opening sequence with the previously manipulated images. Keeping in mind the AHS title sequence theme in mind, I decided on having each image fade into the screen, and then fade out after a few seconds to be replaced with a new image. The different images, which don't have much to do with each other, fade in and out from black, which eerie music plays in the background. It was by accident that I came across the particular piece of music HERE, instantly deciding that the creepy wailing in the song would fit in well with the appearing images. Creating a new layer with an audio file, I cut it down to the right moment of the song, just to the start of the wailing. The particular piece of music fit perfectly with our opening sequence, ending just as the film title KOMA appears.
